Tender Loving Empire is in search of part-time Graphic Designer/Product Designer

If you are not familiar with Tender Loving Empire, we are a handmade marketplace and record label that specializes in promoting independent artists and musicians. We currently operate five brick and mortar stores that carry handmade goods and local music from over 750 independent artists as well as music from our own record label.

Job Description:

We are a visual company. So much of our secret sauce lies in the careful curation of our signature design aesthetic.  Our next graphic designer will have an insatiable affinity for handmade products and trends and also be really into music (ideally some TLE bands).  Their tastes should be on the cutting edge of current visual trends and looking towards the next big thing.

This person should have the ability to juggle multiple design projects while staying impeccably organized and effectively communicating.  They must be well-versed in the demands asked by both print and digital pipelines.

Some of the types of projects you might work on under the direction of our Lead Designer are:

Album Art

Be able to work with artists and the label manager to produce compelling designs for print (CD, vinyl, etc) and the web. Projects vary from layout-based projects – where the task is arranging existing image and text elements into a final design – to full-on, concept-to-completion based projects where original artwork needs to be generated from scratch.

Product Creation

Continue building up TLE’s in-house line of products that we sell online, in stores or wholesale. This involves coming up with ideas for new products, drafting them, receiving feedback and then bringing them through the production process alongside our Signature Line Manager. Our current line includes apparel, greeting cards, prints, keychains, stickers, magnets, housewares etc.  Illustration skills and lots of creative ideas are a must.

Marketing Assets

Work with our Marketing Manager towards rapidly developing marketing and advertising materials. Examples of these types of projects include Facebook cover photos, Instagram images, printed brochures, print advertisements, and email marketing assets.

In-store signage

Meet the visual needs of our bustling, dynamic retail stores. Seasonal vinyl signage, in-store point-of-purchase displays, graphic design needs for window displays, new release marketing displays, and wayfinding signs are just a few of the possible needs of our retail stores.

Manage the printed and digital collateral assets of the company and its employees. This involves designing and printing business cards, formatting email signatures, designing custom envelopes, rubber stamps, etc.

Skills & Requirements

4 year degree in art or a related field (see, it did pay off!).

2+ years experience working in a fast-based, design-related environment.

Highly effective communication skill set.

High attention to detail.

About Tender Loving Empire

Tender Loving Empire (TLE) was founded by Jared and Brianne Mees in 2006 in Portland Oregon. Our goal is and has always been to make connections with visual artists, designers, musicians and craftspeople—and then connect them to new fans, and listeners. We've expanded from our humble beginnings as a mom and pop operation in a tiny out-of-the-way location to a thriving multi-vertical company that employs 40 people via four Portland retail stores: downtown (in the West End), on SE Hawthorne, on NW 23rd, and on Concourse D of the Portland International Airport. We also have an ecommerce website, a line of signature products and an internationally distributed record label. Tender Loving Empire is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
